Users Stopping Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing these drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
